Latest news from Trifork Amsterdam - September newsletter

September 24th, 2013 by
(http://blog.trifork.com/2013/09/24/latest-news-from-trifork-amsterdam-september-newsletter/)

Well the summer in the Netherlands is coming to an end and the Autumn is well on its way. However that brings with it, as always a busy project & events season. Let's talk projects first:

Road, Air & Sea exams are going digital

cbr logoWe mentioned that we won the pitch for the CBR in our last issue, but now we're excited to share that the scope includes examinations for all Dutch theory assessments for road, air & sea too.

This will mean in time, we will be running an average of over 3000 assessments a day amounting to approx. 900,000 per year.

Download a demo of the QTI assessment delivery engine we will use for this project or view the QTI screencast now!

Claims made easy

proofer logoWe are proud to present Proofer. A mobile claim app that will optimize a customer’s claim experience and an insurance company’s processes. Proofer will allow consumers to easily claim valuable items with the use of a mobile app and insurance companies to offer an easy & efficient way to receive their claim requests.

Download the app now. For more information on integrating this app within your business contact Andre Wilderdijk

With the darker months ahead, luckily it's not all doom & gloom as it also means it's conference time and well as always there is lot's to share on that front.

2014 banner
Great speakers, great GOTO Nights
In October we are proud to welcome to Amsterdam at our FREE GOTO Nights:
jez Jez Humble, October 4th, 2013, will be presenting "Lean Enterprise". Jez is a Principal Consultant with ThoughtWorks. His presentation will take a scientific approach to innovation in software development. Large organizations are notoriously bad at disruptive innovation involving software. This is primarily due to cultural and organizational issues, combined with poor architecture a lack of good engineering practices.
michael Michael Nygard, October 14th, 2013 will be presenting "Five Years of DevOps: Where are we now?" It has been five years since Patrick Debois coined the term DevOps to describe a way of working together to deliver systems. In that time, we have rediscovered some gems from the past and we have invented new techniques and tools. In this session, we will take a look at what's new in the world of DevOps, what's old-but-good, and where we still need to advance.

Registration is required and there are limited seats so save your seat now

GOTO Aarhus & Berlin with our partners in crime Elasticsearch

goto conNever change a winning formula and so the team from Amsterdam will team up with Elasticsearch once again in both Aarhus & Berlin just like we did in Amsterdam.

Apart from the tasty bites we will hand out at the stand, delegates that visit our booth will have the chance to enter a prize draw for a free Elasticsearch public training seat, a GOTO conference ticket and a ticket to a NoSQL Search roadshow.

Of course there will be Elasticsearch speakers in both Aarhus & Berlin too so don't miss out on the sessions too!

Our premier appearance at T-Dose

With our strong focus to expand further and delve into the numerous business opportunities we foresee in the south of The Netherlands, we are happy to speak & sponsor at the T-Dose open source event in Eindhoven. If you want to hook up with us at the event or any other time feel free to contact us.

If you want to know more visit our website.

JFall Winners
jfallFor those of you who visited us at JFall this year, you'll probably have done our "Get to know us" questionnaire. We're pleased to say that pretty much everyone got top marks (even if you did get a little help from us every now & then!).

However the lucky winners of the great prizes are as follows:

Summer time...

September 4th, 2012 by
(http://blog.trifork.com/2012/09/04/summer-time/)

For those you may have missed our newsletter last week I'd like to take this opportunity to give you a quick lowdown of what we've been up to. The summer months have been far from quiet and I'm pretty excited to share in this month’s edition lots of news on projects, products & upcoming events.

Hippo & Orange11

hippo logoThe countdown has begun for the launch of The University of Amsterdam online platform. Built by Orange11 with the use of Hippo CMS the website developed with multi-platform functionality in mind is a masterpiece of technology all woven together. We’ll keep you posted about the tips & tricks we implemented.

If you can’t wait until then and want more information, contact Jan-Willem van Roekel.

Mobile Apps; just part of the service!

new motion appWe mentioned in our last newsletter the launch of Learn to write with Tracy. Well since then we’ve been working on apps for many customers including for example The New Motion, a company dedicated to the use of Electric Vehicles. Orange11 has developed an iPhone app that allows users to view or search load locations (in list or map form) and even check real-time availability of these.

ysis screenAnother example is the app for GeriMedica;Ysis Mobiel, a mobile addition to their existing Electronic Health Record database used largely in Geriatric care (also an Orange11 project). The mobile app supports specific work processes allows registered users to document (in line with the strict regulations) all patient related interaction through a simple 3-step logging process. A registration overview screen also shows the latest activities registered, which prevents co-workers from accidentally registering the same activity twice.

Visit our website for more on our mobile expertise.

Orange11 & MongoDB

mongoDB logo

We’ve got tons of exciting things going on with MongoDB as trusted implementation partner so here are a few highlights:

Brown bag sessions

Since the launch of our brown bag sessions we’re excited that so many companies are interested to find out more this innovative open source document database. What we offer is a 60 minute slot with an Orange11 & MongoDB expert, who can educate & demonstrate MongoDB best practices & cover how it can be used in practice. It’s our sneak preview to you of the host of opportunities there are with MongoDB.

Sign up now!

Tech meeting / User Group Meeting

As a partner we’re also proud to host the next user group session on Thursday 6th September, whereby Chief Technical Director, Alvin Richards will be here to cover all the product ins & outs and share some use cases.

Don’t miss out & join usas always it’s free & pizza and cold beer on the house!

Coffee Cookies, Conversation & Customers

Last week we invited some of our customers to a brainstorm session around the new Cookie Law in the Netherlands. Together with Eric Verhelst, a lawyer specialized in the IT industry, Intellectual Property, Internet and Privacy we provided our customers with legal insight and discussed what their concerns & ideas were around solutions. If you have any questions around the new cookie law and are looking for advice, answers & solutions, contact Peter Meijer.

ElasticSearch has just got bigger

es logoCongratulations to our former CEO, Steven Schuurman who announced his new venture:ElasticSearch, the company. The company's product "elasticsearch", is an innovative and advanced open source distributed search engine. The combination of Steven joining forces with elasticsearch founder & originator Shay Banon and his background as co-founder of SpringSource, the company behind the popular Spring Framework, (also close to our heart at Orange11) it’s bound to be a great success. The company offers users and potential users of elasticsearch a definitive source for support, education and guidance with respect to developing, deploying and running elasticsearch in production environments. As Search remains a key focus area for Orange11, with our experience in both Solr and elasticsearch, our customers are guaranteed the best search solution available. For more info contact Bram Smeets.

Our team is getting bigger & better

beach eventsWe’re happy to welcome Michel Vermeulen to the team this month. Michel is an experienced Project Manager and will further professionalize our agile development organization. We also have new talent starting next month, BUT there is room for more.

So if you’re a developer and wanna work on great project with a fun team (left: snapshot from our company beach event) then call Bram Smeets now.

That's all for now folks....

Orange11 June Newsletter

June 15th, 2012 by
(http://blog.trifork.com/2012/06/15/orange11-june-newsletter/)

Hey there, as always we've a bumper packed newsletter blog this month, so sit back and enjoy your read.

First things first...

We're URGENTLY looking for a Front-End Developer.

Check out the detailed job description (in Dutch) on our website or contact me for more information. We've got some great projects lined up and an impressive client list so I look forward to hearing from you.

Seeing is believing

qti banner

In previous publications and blogs I've shared our initial experiences with the QTI Delivery Engine and to support this we've launched a demo in the form of a fun quiz all about The Netherlands using different question types based on the QTI spec. The demo shows how the assessment engine delivers these questions through any browser type, making it possible to assess on virtually any platform.

Try the demo for yourself now and for technical insight view our screencast which I published in an earlier blog entry and for any questions email any of us at qti@orange11.nl.

Furthermore on this same subject, Allard Buijze will also be presenting the session Digital Assessments of the future at DIVERSE in Leuven, Belgium on Wednesday 4th July.

TECH MEETING 5th July welcomes Azul Systems

I'm excited to share with you that at our next tech meeting session we welcome Azul Systems, the company that delivers high-performance and elastic Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) with unsurpassed scalability, manageability and production-time visibility.

This technical session / workshop (it really is a tech session and NOT a sales pitch!) will help understand the JVM on your java applications and what the barriers are to fully exploiting the power of modern hardware. It will specifically cover:

- The Application Memory Wall and State of Garbage Collection today
- Zing Vision
- Application Characterization - Analysis and Reporting pitfalls when testing.

Sign up for free and come and enjoy pizza & beer too.

To round-up a quick recap on some events we've been involved in:

GOTO was hot hot hot...

...in more ways than one that's for sure. A quick low-down:

  1. We had scorching temperatures of above 25C, pretty warm when mingling with around 300 delegates indoors!
  2. All the speakers were on top form and delivered fantastic presentations (available online via the website)
  3. The Mind Flex game at the joint Orange11 & MongoDB stand was very popular (winners announced below)
  4. Beurs van Berlage certainly impressed pretty much everyone that attended
  5. View from the conference party location; Double Tree Hilton was simply breathtaking.

Here are a few of my favorite tweets from the event:

Chris Nodder ‏@uxgrump

Nothing like having your name on the outside of the building as motivation to deliver an interesting talk #gotoams http://pic.twitter.com/rgCI9ulk

Francesco Cesarini ‏@FrancescoC

#gotoams wins the prize for the coolest conference venue I've ever presented at! http://pic.twitter.com/0POHsDNB

and a few snapshots:

the view

Anyway for now, mark you calendars for GOTO Amsterdam next year 18-20th June 2013.

And the winner from our competition is...

1st prize MongoDB training seat: Selman Tayyar.

2nd prize Mind Flex Duel game: Jeroen van der Velden.

Thanks for all of those who participated and if you want any more information on implementing MongoDB then just contact us.

Berlin Buzzwords was buzzing

This year Berlin Buzzwords was even bigger & better than last year with over 700 delegates all into big data, search & scalability. We had several of our own speakers present and Frank Scholten one of them summarized his highlights in his latest blog.

So that is all for now, as with all blogs, this is just my take on things, if there is something in particular you want me to cover or any questions just give me a shout.

Up & Coming Rotterdam

A group of developers from Rotterdam (one of whom works for Orange11) have started up 010DEV; a social techy evening for those who live or work in Rotterdam (or not!). They have their first official social-tech event in May. They have some cool speakers too namely Trisha Gee presenting Disruptor and Peter Hilton who is going to set off in search of the perfect programmer. In between the sessions there ample opportunity to socialize and to taste some of Locus Publicus' excellent beer. If you wanna go register here.

Another QTI success story

Building further on our expertise of the QTI assessment delivery engine, we have implemented this engine for yet another customer; ThiemeMeulenhoff. The Oefenmodule is part of a new portal where Educational content is connected to an assessment engine that has the ability to conduct tests. This new module has been developed based on ThiemeMeulenhoff's existing DigiTrainer. Orange11 optimized the code and introduced new question types and introduced a feedback system that could prompt the use of tips or help. In a dashboard environment teachers can track progress, performance and results for individuals & groups of students. If you are interested in finding out more or a demo, then please contact us.

MongoDB User Group comes to Amsterdam
mongodb logoOrange11 are proud to initiate together with 10gen the MongoDB User Group to the Netherlands. The first session will be hosted at our monthly tech meeting. We will welcome to this session a MongoDB specialist from 10gen. A tentative date for the meet up is Thursday 7th June. We're just mapping out logistics but sign up and we will send more information within the next week or so. Sign up for free and come and enjoy the usual pizza & beer too.

Caching for fun and profit

If you missed our last tech meeting the presentation is ready for download. It gives an overview of where & why caching matters in enterprise application architectures and then focuses on some practical applications and gotchas in Enterprise Java apps, like Hibernate's 2nd level cache and Spring 3.1's new caching abstraction. Here's the presentation.

Thanks for reading as always.
